Almudena is a word used in Spanish, and coming from the Arabic al-mudayna (in French the citadel), diminutive of madina (in French city, city). This word was introduced to the Iberian Peninsula at the time of Al-Andalus, and continued to be used for some toponyms, in the Hispanicized form of Almudena.

Thus, in Madrid, the Almudena was the ancient Muslim medina that stood on the banks of the small river that runs through Madrid, the Manzanares, where the Palacio Real, the Plaza de l'Orient, and the Cathedral are currently located. The term has probably survived due to a number of legends relating to the apparition, near the Muslim wall of Madrid (of which some remains still remain), of the Virgin known as the Virgin of the Almudena, patron saint of Madrid celebrated on November 9.

The word Almudena is also used in Spain as a female given name.
