Aśoka or Ashoka Vardhana (304–232 BC.C.) was the third Mauritanian emperor. He was the son of King Bindusara and grandson of Chandragupta.

Aśoka reigned over most of the Indian subcontinent from circa 269 BC. C. to 232 BC. C. from present-day Afghanistan to Bengal and also south to present-day Mysore.

Around 260 B.C., Asoka waged a destructive war against the state of Kalinga, and conquered it, which none of his predecessors had achieved. After witnessing the carnage of the war, Asoka gradually converted to Buddhism."
