Caesar (sometimes spelled Cesar) is a masculine given name of Latin origin. It can derive its origin from the name Caesar, itself affiliated with the term caesarius which means "hair" (in reference to the early baldness of Julius Caesar) or from the verb caedo (meaning "to slice" or "to cut") always in reference to Julius Caesar, who would have been born by caesarean section. The first name, which became an imperial title in ancient Rome and then a first name at the beginning of the Christian era, was later derived into tsar, kaiser, etc. It was banned by the Catholic Church in the seventh century because it was considered pagan.

It was not until the Renaissance that the name reappeared, first in Italy before spreading to other countries. The name is thus given during the eighteenth century to the black slaves of the United States in order to make a mockery of them.

Caesar is also a revolutionary name, often attributed under the Terror.

French: from the old Roman family name Caesar, of uncertain meaning. It has been connected with Latin caesaries head of hair, but this is probably no more than folk etymology; the name may be of Etruscan origin. Its most notable bearer was Gaius Julius Caesar (?102–44 BC) and it also formed part of the full name of his relative Augustus (Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus Augustus). Subsequently it was used as an imperial title and eventually became a vocabulary word for an emperor (leading to German Kaiser and Russian tsar).
