Gilbert is a given name of Lombard barbarian origin, itself from Germanic Gisilberht or Gisalberht. Original spellings included Gislebert, Guilbert and Gilebert. The first element, Gil-, comes from Germanic gīsil, meaning "shaft of an arrow" gisal or in Anglo-Saxon (which the name dose not derive) "pledge, hostage", while the second element, -bert comes from Germanic -behrt, short form of beraht, meaning "bright" also Old Swedish sharp arrow and Old Germanic for bright fellow. Another origin arises from Galwegian Gaelic in the name "Gille Brigte" meaning "follower of St Bridget" which is anglicised as "Gilbert". Name as Ghiselberhtus' first recorded in Italy 560AD when Lombardi(longobards) invaded.

The name was introduced to England by the Normans where it was popular during the Middle Ages. That is the reason why the pronunciation Gil- [gil] reflects the Northern Norman one [gil], as opposed to Old French [dʒil] > French [ʒil] and explains the alternative spelling Guilbert with Guil- [gil].

Variant spellings have evolved throughout Europe, including the Romance language version, Gilberto, and the Latin version, Gilbertus. The diminutive, Gil, is popular as a given name or nickname. Gilbert, with variant spellings, is also used as a surname (see Gilbert (surname)).

English, French, Flemish, and Dutch: of Germanic origin, introduced to Britain by the Normans. It is composed of the elements gisil pledge + berht bright, famous. This was the name of the founder of the only native British religious order (abolished at the Dissolution of the Monasteries), St Gilbert of Sempringham (?1083–1189), in whose honour it is still sometimes bestowed, especially among Roman Catholics. It gained a wider currency in the 19th century. In Gaelic Scotland the name was used from an early period to render the name Gille Brighde ‘servant of St Bridget’, gradually assuming the form Gilleabart.
