Helen is a feminine given name derived from the Greek Ἑλένη Helenē, meaning "torch" or "corposant." Another possible derivation is from Greek Σελήνη Selene, meaning 'moon'. Helen of Troy is a character in Greek mythology. The name was widely used by early Christians due to Saint Helena, the mother of the emperor Constantine I, who according to legend found a piece of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified when she traveled to Jerusalem. Helen enjoyed a massive burst of popularity in the US during the first two decades of the 20th century where it was one of the top ten names for baby girls, but fell out of favor by 1920 and has not resurfaced.

English form of the name (Greek Hēlēnē) borne in classical legend by the famous beauty, wife of Menelaus, whose seizure by the Trojan prince Paris sparked off the Trojan War. Her name is of uncertain origin; it may be connected with an element meaning ‘ray, beam of the sun’ cf. Greek hēlios sun. It has sometimes been taken as connected with the Greek word for ‘Greek’, Hellēn, but this is doubtful speculation. In the early Christian period the name was borne by the mother of the Emperor Constantine, who is usually known by the Latin version of her name, Helena. She is credited with having found the True Cross in Jerusalem. She was born in about 248, probably in Bithynia. However, in medieval England it was thought that she had been born in Britain, which greatly increased the popularity of the name there.
