Italian: of Germanic origin, derived from the element hrok rest. The name was borne by a 14th-century saint, a Frenchman from Montpelier who was on a pilgrimage to Rome when he encountered plague victims in north Italy. He stopped to nurse them, and went from place to place ministering to these unfortunates in many cities. Eventually, at Piacenza, he too was stricken. In his extremity he was comforted by the companionship of a dog (hence his representation in paintings as accompanied by a dog). He is said to have recovered and returned home, but was not recognized by his family and died in prison. He is a patron saint of the sick and his aid is invoked by Roman Catholics against illness.
