English: of uncertain origin. The name seems to have been first recorded by the poet Thomas Gray (1716–71) as that of Horace Walpole's cat, ‘drowned in a tub of gold fishes’. The metre shows that the name was stressed on the first syllable, but there is no clue as to its derivation. Gray was possibly influenced by the Arabic name Selim ‘peace’.
