English and Scottish: transferred use of the Scottish surname, which originated as a Norman baronial name borne by a family that held a manor in northern France called Saint-Clair, probably Saint-Clair-sur-Elle in La Manche. It is an extremely common Scottish surname: the Norman family received the earldoms of Caithness and Orkney. They merged with the Norse- and Gaelic-speaking inhabitants of their domains to form one of the most powerful of the Scottish Highland families. The name of the novelist Sinclair Lewis (1885–1951) may have had some influence on the choice of this as a twentieth-century given name.
