Ursula is a feminine given name in several different languages. The name is derived from a diminutive of the Latin ursa, which means "bear". The name has been rather uncommon in the English-speaking world, although its use has been recently influenced by the Swiss-born actress Ursula Andress (born 1936).

English, German, and Scandinavian: from the Latin name Ursula, a diminutive of ursa (she-)bear (cf. Urs). This was the name of a 4th-century saint martyred at Cologne with a number of companions, traditionally said to have been eleven thousand, but more probably just eleven, the exaggeration being due to a misreading of a diacritic mark in an early manuscript.
