History and Origin
Ainhoa, is a Basque woman's name. It has its origin in the name of the homonymous town (Ainhoa), located in the French Basque Country (Iparralde). This town has a Marian sanctuary dedicated to the invocation of the Virgin of Aránzazu.
Legend has it that an image of the Virgin appeared to a Basque shepherd among some thorns. In this place known as Aránzazu ("place of thorns" in Basque) a sanctuary was built where this image has been venerated for centuries. The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Aránzazu located in Oñate (Guipúzcoa) was highly revered and visited by Basque shepherds on both sides of the border, but wars and political conflicts closed the Franco-Spanish border for many years, preventing Basque-French shepherds from coming to venerate their patron saint on the other side of the border. That is why the Labortans built in the town of Ainhoa, next to the border, a sanctuary where they could venerate the image of the Virgin of Aránzazu, which is known here as Our Lady of the Hawthorn (Notre Dame d'Aubépine). This invocation is known as "Virgen de Ainhoa" and has given rise to the name of woman, which is one of the most popular in the Basque Country. His Saint is celebrated on August 15.
