History and Origin
Alvin is an English male given name.
English: from an Old English personal name composed of the elements ælf elf, supernatural being + wine friend. The medieval name was not especially common in Britain either before or after the Norman Conquest, but the modern form has recently become fairly popular in the United States. The reasons for this are not entirely clear; association with Calvin may be a factor, but a more plausible (though less elevated) reason may be that it was the name given to the naughty chipmunk in a popular American television cartoon series of the 1960s.
