Amos is a masculine given name of Hebrew origin in its English variant. According to the Bible, Amos was a shepherd and fig grower at Tecoa, on the edge of the desert of Judah (Amos 1:1). He was a prophet in Israel, the northern kingdom, during the reign of Jeroboam II (783 BC.C - 743 BC.C.). He wrote the book of the Bible that bears his name.
Biblical: name of a Hebrew prophet of the 8th century BC, whose sayings are collected in the book of the Bible that bears his name. This is of uncertain derivation, but may be connected with the Hebrew verb amos to carry. In some traditions it is assigned the meaning ‘borne by God’.
