Andrea (/ˈændriə, ˈɑːn-, ɑːnˈdreɪə/) is a given name which is common worldwide, cognate to Andrew.

It is traditionally popular because, according to the Christian Bible, Saint Andrew was one of the earliest disciples of Jesus and one of the twelve Apostles.

1 (m.) Italian equivalent of Andrew.
2 (f.) English: of disputed origin. It has been in use since the 17th century, although never common. It is now generally taken as a feminine equivalent of Andreas, and this probably represents its actual origin. However, it was not in use in the Middle Ages, and the suggestion has also been made that it represents an independent coinage in English from the Greek vocabulary word andreia manliness, virility.

"Andrea" comes from ancient Greek and means "Bold MAN"/"Valiant warrior". It is thus not a name for girls but a male name. St. Andrea was a man, not a woman. The fact it ends in -A has created the error, especially in the U.S.A. and norhern Europe. Luca too is a male name, although ending in A, as well as many others like Isaia, Elia etc.
