Anitra is an Arabic-sounding female given name, originally invented in the 1860s by the playwright Henrik Ibsen for a minor character in his play Peer Gynt. It later became popular as a female name in Scandinavian countries.
People with the name Anitra include Anitra Ahtola, Anitra Ford, Anitra Rasmussen, and Anitra Steen. The name has also been given to the asteroid 1016 Anitra.
Apparently a literary coinage by Henrik Ibsen, who used it as the name of an Eastern princess in Peer Gynt (1867). No Arabic original is known, however. It is now occasionally used as a given name, not only in Norway, but also elsewhere in Scandinavia, in Germany, and in the English-speaking world.
