Italian: a typically Sardinian name, bestowed in honour of a Christian saint who was martyred under the Emperor Hadrian in c.110 on the islet of Sulcis near Sardinia, which is now also known as the Isola di Sant'Antioco (‘island of St Antiochus’). The name is from Greek Antiochos, composed of the elements anti against + ekhein to have, i.e. to hold out against, denoting stubborn tenacity of character. It was borne in classical times by the father of the Macedonian general Seleucus I, who in c.300 BC named the city of Antioch in Asia Minor after him.
