Ariel is a given name from Biblical Hebrew אריאל Ariel that literally means "lion of God". The female form is אריאלה (transliterated as Ariela, Ariella, or Arielle), which means "lioness of God", although "Ariel" can also be used as a woman's name. In modern Hebrew, Ariel it is primarily used as a male name. However, in recent years in English-speaking countries, it has been more commonly used as a female name. An alternative English and French spelling is Arielle.
Common short forms of Ariel are Ari and Arik for boys (primarily in Hebrew-speaking areas) and Arie, Elle, and Ella for girls (primarily in English and French-speaking areas).
Jewish: from the biblical placename Ariel, said to mean ‘lion of God’ in Hebrew. It is mentioned in the prophecies of Ezra (8: 16) and Isaiah (29: 1–2). It has achieved popularity as a modern Hebrew first name, perhaps as an alternative to Arye.
