In the classical period this was borne by an Athenian statesman known as Aristides the Just, whose probity was such that he helped to vote for his own banishment by writing his own name down when asked to do so by an illiterate citizen. In the Christian era, St Aristides (d. c.123) was an Athenian philosopher who presented an Apologia for Christianity to the Emperor Hadrian. In recent times, the name is best known as being that of the French socialist statesman Aristide Briand (1862–1932), who advocated the idea of a United States of Europe.
