History and Origin
Russian: from Greek Arkadios, an adjective referring to the region of Arcadia in the central Peloponnese. This placename was explained in classical mythology as being derived from Arkas, the name of a son of Zeus and the nymph Callisto, founder of the Arcadian people. The true origin is unknown. In the later classical period Arcadia became the conventional setting for pastoral idylls, a convention copied in later European literature. The Russian given name owes its existence mainly to St Arkadios, a 4th-century missionary bishop venerated in the Eastern Church.
Cognate: Hungarian: Árkos.
