History and Origin
Of New Testament Greek origin, from a name that in fact represents a short form of various compound names containing that of the goddess Artemis (for example, Artemidoros ‘gift of Artemis’ and Artemisthens ‘strength of Artemis’). It is borne in the Bible by a character mentioned briefly in St Paul's letter to Titus (3: 12). The name enjoyed some popularity among the Puritans in the 17th century, but fell out of use again.
