Yaa Asantewaa was queen mother of the Ashanti Empire in what is known as Ghana today. When the British invaders demanded the Golden Stool, which was considered sacred by the Ashanti, she led an armed rebellion against the British. She was almost successful in capturing the Governor of the region, but was thwarted when reinforcements arrived. She was deported to Seyshelle and died in exile in the Seychelles in 1921. Her dream of an Ashanti free of British rule was realized in 1957, when the Ashanti protectorate gained independence as part of Ghana, the first African nation in Sub-Saharan Africa to achieve this feat. Eventually, the British returned the Golden Stool to the Ashanti and it is put on public display every 5 years. She is revered as a person of integrity and courage. Those bearing her name should do so with great pride and dignity.
