In the framework of Hinduism, the god Balarama is the elder brother of the god Krishna.

In Devanagari script it is written बलराम, bala-rāma ('force-pleasure' or the pleasure of force, in Sanskrit). It is also known as

  • Baladeva (god of strength),
  • Balabhadra (strong sponsorship) and
  • Gadádhara (the one who holds the mace)
  • Jalaiudha (in English Halāyudha, 'the one who fights with the hoe'; the Sanskrit jalá is cognate from the Spanish 'jalar')

In Vishnuism and Krishnaism (two branches of Hinduism) and in various South Indian religions, Balarama is worshipped as an avatar of the god Vishnu. It is listed as such in the Bhagavata-purana (tenth century AD.C.). It is also known as a manifestation of Shesha, the gigantic serpent on which Vishnu rests.

The Bhagavata-purana describes Krishna as the Personality of Godhead, from whom Vishnu and other gods emanate. As part of this divine emanation, krishna's first expansion is Balarama. From Balarama appear all the other incarnations of God. Of the three spiritual characteristics of God described in the Sanskrit texts, sat, cit, and ananda (eternity, knowledge, and bliss), Balarama is in charge of eternity and knowledge. That is why he is worshipped as an adi-guru (chief teacher).
