The name Baldwin or Balduin is of Anglo-Saxon and Old German origin, from the Old English Bealdwine, or the Old German equivalent Baldavin, meaning "bold friend". French version Baudouin, Dutch version Boudewijn. It was frequently used in medieval Britain as a surname.

English: Norman name composed of the Germanic elements bald bold, brave + wine friend. In the Middle Ages this was a comparatively common name, which gave rise to a surname. It was the given name of the Norman crusader (Baldwin of Boulogne) who in 1100 was elected first king of Jerusalem. It was also the name of four further crusader kings of Jerusalem. In modern English use, it normally represents a transferred use of the surname rather than a direct revival of the Norman given name.
Cognate: French (esp. Belgian): Baudouin.
