English: name ascribed in medieval Christian tradition to one of the three wise men of the Orient who brought gifts to the infant Jesus (see also Jasper and Melchiorre). The name is a variant of that of the biblical king Belshazzar and means ‘Baal protect the king’. It has never been a common given name in the English-speaking world.
