History and Origin
Burkhard (other forms: Burkhart, Burkard, Burkhardt, Burkert, Burckhardt, Burgheard, Borchardt, Burchard, evolved into Bouchard in French) is a Germanic given name formed from burg (fortress, protection) and hard (strong, solid). It was worn by Frankish lords and bishops between the tenth and twelfth centuries.
German: from an old Germanic personal name composed of the elements burg protection + hard hardy, brave, strong. St Burkhard (d. c.754) was a companion of St Boniface who became the first bishop of Würzburg and founded several Benedictine monasteries in the area. Like Boniface, he seems to have been an Anglo-Saxon by birth, perhaps originally bearing the cognate Old English personal name Burgheard.
