History and Origin
Catriona is a feminine given name in the English language. It is an Anglicisation of the Scottish Gaelic Catrìona, and the Irish Caitríona. Both Caitríona and Catrìona are Goidelic forms of the English Katherine, which is most likely derived from the Greek for "pure."
Scottish and Irish: Anglicized form of the Gaelic names Ca(i)trìona (Scottish) and Caitríona (Irish), which are themselves forms of Katherine. The name is now also used elsewhere in the English-speaking world, although it is still especially popular among people of Scottish ancestry. It attracted wider attention as the title of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Catriona (1893), sequel to Kidnapped.
Variant: Catrina.
