Until the 20th century, Chad was an uncommon name. According to the Social Security Administration, Chad first entered the top 1000 names for male children in the United States in 1945, when it was the 997th most popular name. Its popularity peaked in 1972 and 1973, at number 25. As of 2010 it was the 547th most popular name for boys in the United States. Chad of Mercia, a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon churchman and saint, is one of the earliest recorded people with the name Chad.
English: modern spelling of Old English Ceadda, name of a 7th-century saint who was for a time archbishop of York. This is of uncertain derivation. The name is comparatively rare, even among Roman Catholics, by whom it is chiefly favoured.
