English: American coinage from a well-known New England surname. It seems to have been originally chosen as a given name in honour of the Harvard College president Charles Chauncy (1592–1672), the New England clergyman Charles Chauncy (1705–87), or the naval officer Isaac Chauncey (1772–1840). All these men were almost certainly descended from a single family; the surname is found in England in the Middle Ages, and probably has a Norman baronial origin, but now seems to be extinct in Britain.
