English: transferred use of the surname, originally a local name from any of the various places (in e.g. Cheshire, Shropshire) so called from Old English clif cliff, slope. As a given name it seems to have been originally chosen in honour of ‘Clive of India’ (Robert Clive, created Baron Clive of Plassey in 1760).
