Daria (also written as Darya) is the female variant of the ancient name of Persian origin Darius (from Persian: داريوش ‎ Dariush, IPA: [dɒrjuʃ]; Old Persian Darayavaus), probably meaning "he who hold the good". Daria is a saint of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. In Persian, Darya means "sea".

The name has been used extensively in Russia and other Slavic countries. The common Russian nickname is Dasha and the common Polish nickname is Dasia. It has sometimes also been seen as a Russian form of the name Dorothy. Dolly, a diminutive of Dorothy, was also once a common nickname for Daria.
