History and Origin
Ebenezer, less commonly spelled Ebenezar, is a male given name of Hebrew origin meaning "Stone of the help" (derived from the phrase "Eben ha-Ezer"). The name is sometimes abbreviated as Eben.
English: originally the name (meaning ‘stone of help’ in Hebrew) of a place mentioned in the Bible, where the Israelites were defeated by the Philistines (I Samuel 4:1). When they took their revenge Samuel set up a memorial stone with this same name (1 Samuel 7:12). It was taken up as a given name by the Puritans in the 17th century, possibly after being misread in the Bible as a personal name, or else because of its favourable etymological connotations. It now has unfavourable connotations because of the miserly character of Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol (1843)
