History and Origin
Eloy or Eloi (pronunciation: in AFI /e.lwa/, transliterated into Spanish would be e-luá) is a masculine given name (and also surname), which is the early French adaptation of the Latin name Elegius, meaning The Chosen One. It is used with these spellings in several languages, including Spanish. The name initially became quite popular because of the French saint Saint Éloi (also known in Spanish as San Eligio). Its feminine variant is Eloísa.
Spanish: from the Latin name Eligius, a derivative of eligere to choose, select. St Eligius (588–660) was a bishop of Noyon who evangelized the districts around Antwerp, Ghent, and Courtrai.
Variant: Eligio.
Cognates: French, Portuguese: Eloi. Italian: Eligio.
