History and Origin
English and Scottish: Latinate feminine form of Eric, coined towards the end of the 18th century. It remains common in Gaelic Scotland as an Anglicized form of Oighrig (see also Eiric and Eithrig). It has no doubt also been reinforced by the fact that erica is the Latin word for ‘heather’.
