History and Origin
Fabiola is a female name of Latin origin. It is the diminutive of Fabia, the female form of the Roman family clan name Fabius, which may possibly be derived from Latin faba "bean" (see Fabia (gens), Origin of the gens). Saint Fabiola (fourth century) was an energetic Roman matron who organized the first hospice for sick and needy travelers.
Late Latin feminine diminutive form of Fabius (see Fabio). St Fabiola (d. c.400) was a Roman widow who founded the first Western hospital, originally a hostel to accommodate the flood of pilgrims who flocked to Rome, but in which she tended the sick as well as accommodating the healthy.
