Fyodor is a male Russian personal name of Greek origin; ancient Greek. Θεόδωρος ("God-given", "God's gift"). The pre-revolutionary and ecclesiastical form of the name is Yeodor (Theodore). After the Revolution and the Reform of Russian Orthography of 1918, the name began to be written as "Fedor" or as "Fyodor". Refers to two-component theophoric names with the component [theo]- (θεός, "God"); the second component is δῶρον, "gift". Many theophoric names with the morpheme [feo] are actually Christian, that is, they appeared and began to be used as personal names among the first Christians; however, the name Theodore was known long before the emergence of Christianity: the bearer of the name was, for example, the ancient Greek mathematician Theodore of Cyrene (late V - early IV century BC).

In the Christian name book, the name Theodore is associated with several early Christian saints; the most famous and revered are the martyrs Theodore Stratilatus and Theodore Tyrone (early fourth century).
