History and Origin
Franklin is an English given name for males. It is of English coming from the medieval English Frankeleyn, coming from the Anglo-Franco fraunclein. Its meaning is landowner of free but not noble origin.
English: transferred use of the surname, which derives from Middle English frankeleyn freeman, which came to denote a member of a class of freeholders who were not of noble birth. This is derived from the Norman French word frank, which means both ‘free’ and ‘Frankish’. The connection between freemen and Franks is reflected in the Late Latin term francālia, originally denoting lands held by Franks, which came to mean lands that were not subject to taxes. The given name is now quite common, especially in the United States, having been so used at first in honour of the American statesman and scientist Benjamin Franklin (1706–90), and more recently of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945).
