History and Origin
Italian: characteristically Sardinian name, unrelated to Gavin. It is probably from Late Latin Gabīnus, originally an ethnic name for someone from the city of Gabium in Latium. St Gabinus was martyred at Torres in Sardinia, together with his companion Crispulus, under the Roman emperor Hadrian (c.130).
