Irish Gaelic form of Gerald, from Old French Geraud. The name originated in Ireland at the time of Strongbow's invasion (1170): the constable of Strongbow's castle at Pembroke was called Gerald, and his son founded a major Irish family, the Fitzgeralds. The Irish form of the name has been revived in modern times.
