History and Origin
Italian: apparently of Germanic origin, representing a feminine short form of names containing the element gild sacrifice (cf. e.g. Hermenegildo). Its popularity as a current given name derives in part from its use in Verdi's Rigoletto, in which Gilda, the innocent young daughter of the hunchback jester Rigoletto, becomes the object of the Duke of Mantua's affections and is murdered on her father's orders as the result of a series of misunderstandings.
