History and Origin
Gráinne is a feminine given name in the Irish language. The name is of an uncertain origin, although it is possible that it may be connected with the word grán, meaning "grain", and thus refer to an ancient corn goddess. The name is borne by a character in Irish mythology-Gráinne, who was the daughter of Cormac mac Airt, a legendary High King of Ireland.
The name can be Latinised as Grania; and can be Anglicised as Granya. The name Gráinne can also be represented in English as Grace, Gertrude, and Gertie. These English names are etymologically unrelated to Gráinne.
Irish Gaelic: of uncertain origin, possibly a derivative of grán grain or gráin disgust. In Irish legend Gráinne was the daughter of King Cormac; she was beloved by the hero Finn, but eloped with Finn's nephew Diarmait. Finn pursued them over great distances, and eventually brought about the death of Diarmait, after which Gráinne killed herself. The name has sometimes been Anglicized as Grace.
