History and Origin
Guy (/ɡaɪ/, French: [ɡi]) is an English given name, which is derived from the French form of the Germanic name Guido. "Guy" is also an Anglicization of the Hebrew name גיא, transliterated "Gai", which means "Ravine".
English and French (of Norman origin): from a short form of a compound Germanic name having as its first element witu wood or wīt wide. In Norman French initial w- regularly became gu-, and the usual Norman forms of the name were Gy or Guido. In medieval Latin the same name occurs as Wido. It was a popular name among the Normans, enhanced no doubt by the romance of Guy of Warwick, recounting the exploits of a folk hero of the Crusades.
Cognates: Italian: Guido. Dutch: Veit.
