History and Origin
Hermenegildo is a masculine given name of German origin in its Spanish variant. It comes from the Gothic Airmanagild, from airmana, "cattle" (cattle and horses), and gilds, "value", so it means "the value of the cattle", "the one who is worth for his cattle".
Spanish and Portuguese: of Germanic (Visigothic) origin, composed of the elements ermen, irmen whole, entire + gild sacrifice. St Hermenigild (d. 585) was a son of the Visigothic king Leovigild; he is considered a martyr, though the reasons behind the revolt against his father which led to his death were at least as much political as religious.
Variant: Ermenegildo.
Cognates: Italian: Ermenegildo. French: Ermenegilde.
