History and Origin
Isidore is a masculine given name of Greek origin, derived from Ἰσίδωρος, Isídōros, composed of Ἶσις, Isis and δῶρον, dōron: "gift from (the goddess) Isis".
Her name survived the suppression of the worship of the Egyptian goddess Isis in the newly Christianized Roman Empire and is, among others, the name of several Christian saints.
Other names that include "gift" refer to the Greek "Theodore" ("gift from God"), the Persian "Mithridates" ("gift or gift from Mithra") and Datis ("gift"), and the Hebrew "Matanya" ("gift from Yahweh"). Names with the Indo-European "gift" are ultimately derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *deh₃-, "to give".
Isidora or Isadora is the equivalent feminine given name, the feminine form of Isídōros. The Isidora variant was the ninth most popular name given to girls in Chile in 2006.
