History and Origin
Oia (Ancient Greek: Ίας, "Ionian") is a feminine personal name of Greek origin.
In the Christian naming tradition, the name of Ia is associated with the venerated martyr Saint Ia (Persian; † c. 362-364), who suffered persecution and martyrdom in Persia under Shapur II. An entry in the Roman martyrology indicates the death of 9,000 Christians in that persecution.
In Catholicism, St. Ia of Corneville, the enlightener of Cornwall (fifth century), is also venerated.
A. V. Superanskaya and A. V. Suslova noted the name Iya, consisting of two letters (but three sounds), as the shortest in writing among women's calendar names. "Rare, and therefore noticeable" characterized by A. K. Zholkovsky the sound combination that forms the name.
Superanskaya and Suslova, based on the study of the statistics of newborn names in Leningrad, for several decades attributed the name to the category of female names that have received limited distribution.
