History and Origin
Joel (יוֹאֵל Standard Hebrew Yoʾel, Tiberian Hebrew Yôʾēl) "Yahu is god", "YHWH is God", or the modern translation:Jehovah Is God.
Joel as a given name appears in the Hebrew Bible.
Biblical name, composed of two different Hebrew elements, Yah(weh) and El, both of which mean ‘God’; the implication of the name is that the Hebrew God, Yahweh, is the only true god. This is a common name in the Bible, being borne by, among others, one of King David's ‘mighty men’ (1 Chronicles 11: 38), and by a minor prophet who lived in the 8th century BC. The book of the Bible of which the latter was author interprets a plague of locusts as a punishment from God and uses it as an occasion for a call to repentance. The name has been perennially popular among Jews, and was also very popular among the Puritans and other Christian fundamentalists. It is still used in America, where it seems to be enjoying a modest revival of popularity. In Britain, however, it is not common.
Cognate: French: Joël (currently a fashionable given name).

It's nice to see a name site that is actually sticking to the true meaning of names. It has become common for the name Jehovah to be replaced by LORD in the bible as it is said that Jehovah is too sacred to pronounce but this is also very misleading. I remember reading the Catholic Book of Baby names in the 1960's and it has no problems using the name Jehovah in its meanings. Obviously Joel is a Hebrew name and the Hebrew God was Yaweh translated Jehovah in English.

Other meanings of the name Joel which I've read are "Declarer of God" or "He who declares God."
