History and Origin
New Testament: Greek form of Judah. This is borne in the New Testament by several characters, but most notably by Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. There was another apostle called Judas (see Jude), and the name was also borne by Judas Maccabbaeus, who liberated Judea briefly from the Syrians in 165 BC, but was killed in battle (161). His story was very popular in the Middle Ages. However, the association with Iscariot has ensured that this name has hardly ever been used as a Christian name, and that Jude has always been much rarer than other apostles' names.
