History and Origin
Within the framework of Hinduism, Kali is one of the main goddesses. She is the shakti (or 'energy') of the male god Shiva, and is considered one of his consorts.
The Hindu religion that worships the goddess Kali is called Shaktism. In general, Hindus of any species-regardless of the deity they particularly worship-consider her the universal Mother. Kali represents the destructive aspect of divinity, it is destructive of evil and demons.
Its early history as a creature of annihilation still has some influence, while more complex tantric beliefs sometimes expand its role, placing it as the "ultimate reality" and the "source of being."
The recent pious movement conceives of Kali as the benevolent mother goddess.
Kali is associated with many devis ('goddesses') as well as the god Shiva. She is the patron saint of the Indian city of Calcutta (in Bengal). His main temple is the Kalighat, where animal sacrifices are still performed in his honor. Their vehicle (vajana) is a tiger.
