Knut (Norwegian and Swedish), Knud (Danish), or Knútur (Icelandic) is a Scandinavian first name, of which the anglicised form is Cnut or Canute. In Germany both "Knut" and "Knud" are used. In Spanish and Portuguese Canuto is used which comes from the Latin version Canutus. The name is derived from the Old Norse Knútr meaning "knot".

It is the name of several medieval kings of Denmark, two of whom also reigned over England during the first half of the 11th century.

Scandinavian: from Old Norse Knútr ‘knot’, originally a byname given to a short, squat man. King Knut (d. 1035) ruled over Denmark, Norway, and England in the 11th century. His great-nephew Knut (d. 1086) was another king of Denmark, who founded churches throughout his realm. He was canonized as a martyr, the main reason apparently being that he was murdered by opponents of the laws enforcing payment of tithes to the Church. The latter's nephew, also Knut (d. 1131), was Duke of Schleswig and is also venerated as a martyr, although the justification for this is not clear. It is still a popular Danish and Norwegian given name.
Variant: Danish: Knud.
Anglicized form: Canute.
