Though its origin is disputed, it can be found in many languages, mostly English speaking countries and Russia, but also Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Ukraine and Belarus. It is also an abbreviated form of the name Svetlana used in Russian, Czech and Bulgarian and Alana in English.
