History and Origin
Welsh: altered form (influenced by the vocabulary word llew lion) of Llywelyn, an ancient name of uncertain derivation. It goes back to an Old Celtic form Lugobelinos; the first element seems to be the divine name Lugu- (see Lleu), the second is found also in names such as Cunobelinus or Cymbeline. In historical times the name was borne in particular by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (1173–1240) and his grandson Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (d. 1282), Welsh princes who for a time united their countrymen in North Wales and led opposition to the power of the Norman barons in South Wales and the borders. It has sometimes been Anglicized as Lewis.
Short forms: Llew, Lyn.
Pet form: Llelo.
