History and Origin
Taíno aboriginal name. Wife of Cacique Enriquillo, (Quisqueya) Rep. Dom.
Mencía Although its origins are confusing and there are no reliable sources in this regard, the first documented references to the name of Mencía appear in Navarre, northern Castile and the Aragonese Pyrenees, areas where some non-Germanic names such as Sancho, García, Galindo, Íñigo, Fortún, Velasco, Lope, Jimeno or Diego for men, and Oneca, were common. Jimena, Gadea, Sancha or Velasquita for women. Other historical references suggest that it would be an abbreviation of the expression "The sweet name of Mary" in Latin (Nomen Dulcis Maria), from which the last syllables (MEN-CÍ-A) would be taken to form this name.
Another origin, perhaps more reliable, given the first documented references, points out that it comes from the word "Mendia", which in Basque means "mountain".
In the seventeenth century the name of Mencía still remained valid since it appears in the "Treasure of the Castilian or Spanish Language" of Covarrubias, in Burgos. Today it is a less widespread name but still used in areas of Castile.
The name has been carried by historical figures such as Mencía de Mendoza, Mencía López de Haro and Mencía de Mendoza y Figueroa.
